Casino chips have been made from a wide selection of materials in an almost endless variety of styles since the advent of gambling and the requirement to track winnings. The most common components employed at this time in the creation of modern poker chips are plastic, clay, and acrylics. Clay chips, the oldest of the group, have been manufactured in the US since the late 1800s.

Back in the 19th century, poker enthusiasts appear to be using any small item with value imaginable. Early poker enthusiasts occasionally employed rough gold pieces along with chips – normally manufactured of wood and clay. By the 20th century, poker chip designs started to employ a bigger prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips gave way to chips with engraved slits to hold them neatly piled up together.

There is little debate that poker has expanded steadily in appeal since its beginnings in the 1800s. With the huge increase of internet gaming and specialty TV shows, community interest in poker has feed the fire more rapidly than ever before. Most folks are initially introduced to poker by TV showssuch as "Celebrity Poker" or the Travel Channel’s "World Poker Tour," and most will participate in their 1st hands on the web. Despite online poker’s growth, not much replaces the feeling of holding heavy poker chips in your hands, tossing chips into the center of a casino table, or creating tall pilesstacks of chips after displaying a victorious hand.
