Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention more on poker.
The real advancement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently compete against each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
