Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would often challenge one another. He had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
